Activities and Attractions
Most likely inspired by Te Anau's famous glowworm caves, Te Anau was originally named Te Ana-au, Maori for "Cave of Swirling Water". The attractive town of Te Anau, with its spectacular backdrop of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison Mountains, lies nestled on the edge of Lake Te Anau- the largest lake in the South Island.
Te Anau is the closest base to Milford Sound, with a scenice 2.5 hour drive from Te Anau to Milford.
The international reputation as "walking capital of the world" is well-earned, with Te Anau being the departure point for many excellent walking tracks. Coach and boat transfers are available to all major tracks including the Great Walks, the Milford, Routeburn and Kepler Track.

Te Anau Glowworm Caves
Discover an underground world of sculpted rock and rushing water, before drifting in silent darkness beneath thousands of glowworms. Guided tours commence with a scenic cruise across beautiful Lake Te Anau, to the western shores where the underground network of caves is located.
Te Anau Wildlife Centre
Emjoy a walk along the shore of Lake Te Anau to visit the Wildlife Centre. Here you can view the extremely rare native bird the Takahe, as well as many other native birds.

This is a great picnic opportunity for children to try their hands at angling, as the lake is specially stocked with brown and rainbow trout.
Ata Whenua
In the heart of Te Anau, enjoy the award winning film Ata Whenua Shadowland. This film offers 32 minutes of breathtaking Fiordland scenery, shot on 35mm film across extremes of season, climate and terrain. The cinema's large, curved screen and digital sound make viewing the journey through one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth an experience to remember. Screenings daily.
