Activities & Attractions in Te Anau, New Zealand

Most likely inspired by Te Anau's famous glow worm caves, Te Anau was originally named Te Ana-au, Maori for 'Cave of Swirling Water'.

The attractive town with the spectacular backdrop of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison Mountains, lies nestled on the edge of Lake Te Anau - the largest lake in the South Island. Te Anau is the closest base to Milford Sound, and it's international reputation as the 'walking capital of the world' is well-earned.

With so many spectacular and unique attractions and activities on offer, you'll need an extra night! Whether you want to get up close and personal to the Fiords, explore our World Heritage Fiordland National Park, or soar above the mountains for a scenic flight, there is something for everyone.

Our team at Distinction Te Anau Hotel & Villas offers expert advice for your Fiordland holiday, and can make all your activity and attraction reservations for you at no additional cost. Feel free to enquire when booking your stay with us.

Must Dos in Te Anau

Te Anau Glow Worm Caves
Discover an underground world of sculpted rock and rushing water, before drifting in silent darkness beneath thousands of glowworms. Guided tours commence with a scenic cruise across beautiful Lake Te Anau, to the western shores where the underground network of caves is located.

Te Anau Wildlife Centre
Enjoy a walk along the shore of Lake Te Anau to visit the Wildlife Centre. Here you can view the extremely rare native bird the Takahe, as well as many other native birds.

Lake Henry, Ivon Wilson Park
This is a great picnic opportunity for children to try their hands at angling, as the lake is specially stocked with brown and rainbow trout.

Ata Whenua
In the heart of Te Anau, enjoy the award winning film Ata Whenua Shadowland. This film offers 32 minutes of breathtaking Fiordland scenery, shot on 35mm film across extremes of season, climate and terrain. The cinema's large, curved screen and digital sound make viewing the journey through one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes on earth an experience to remember. Screenings daily.
